The HVAC refrigerant change is on the horizon, but there’s no need to worry. Forbes Refrigeration & HVAC is here to guide you through this transition smoothly and ensure you make the best decision for your home or business.

What’s Changing and Why?

In response to the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act of 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is phasing out refrigerants, like R-410A, to meet a 2025 requirement: HVAC systems must use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 750.

R-410A, with a GWP of 2,088, is being replaced with more eco-friendly options like R-454B and R-32 with a GWP below 750.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re planning to replace your HVAC system, here are your options:

  • Before 2025: Secure an R-410A system while supplies last, but act fast – availability is decreasing as the deadline approaches.
  • After 2025: New installations will require R-454B or R-32 systems. These next-gen options are more environmentally friendly but could come at a higher price due to new technology and market demand.

Why the Switch Matters

  • Environmental Impact: R-410A contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. The new refrigerants (R-454B/R-32) offer a more sustainable solution to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Increased Efficiency: New refrigerants are designed to operate at lower pressures, reducing the wear and tear on your system and potentially lowering maintenance needs over time.
  • Get Ahead of Rising Costs: As the transition approaches, inventory of R-410A systems is dwindling, and new units using R-454B or R-32 could become more costly due to increased demand. Secure an upgrade today to potentially save on future expenses. (Anticipated pricing increase to be anywhere between 15% – 20% higher)

Pros & Cons of Replacing Now vs. Later

Replacing Now

  • Pro: Keep using R-410A until your new system’s natural lifespan ends.
  • Con: R-410A systems will be phased out, limiting future service options.

Transition Early

  • Pro: Access potential tax incentives for energy-efficient upgrades and be prepared for upcoming changes.
  • Con: Higher initial cost for newer systems, but savings long-term.

Avoid Supply Shortages

  • Pro: As R-410A systems run out, act now to secure one before they are unavailable.
  • Con: Limited time frame before R-410A systems are out of stock.

PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT WITH A SECOND OPINION

Unfortunately, we’ve seen an uptick in companies conducting questionable assessments, even going as far as sabotaging systems to push for full-system replacements.

At Forbes Refrigeration & HVAC, we believe in transparency and integrity. If you’ve been told your system is beyond repair, call us for a free second opinion. We’ll give you an honest assessment – integrity to serve, not to sell.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is changing with HVAC refrigerants in 2025 & why?

Starting in 2025, the EPA requires HVAC systems to use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 750, phasing out R-410A (GWP 2,088) due to its higher environmental impact. New alternatives like R-454B and R-32 have a lower GWP, making them more eco-friendly choices.

Will new HVAC systems be more expensive?

Yes. The newer refrigerants and systems will come with higher initial costs due to advanced technology and market demand. We have been informed to anticipate pricing of new systems to be anywhere between 15% – 20% higher.

Does this mean my current R-410A system will become illegal?

No, you can continue using your existing R-410A system after 2025. The changes only apply to new HVAC systems being manufactured or installed. However, R-410A production will end after 2024, and its availability will decrease over time, potentially making future repairs more costly.

R-410A systems can still be installed until the end of 2025 if they were manufactured before 2025.

Will R-410A refrigerant still be available?

Yes, however we are already seeing availability decrease, and manufacturers will no longer produce new R-410A systems. It’s best to act sooner rather than later if you plan to replace your system with another R-410A unit before they are no longer available.

Can I keep my current system and just change the refrigerant?

Unfortunately, no. HVAC systems are designed for specific refrigerants, so you can’t swap out R-410A for R-454B or R-32. A system upgrade is necessary to switch to the new refrigerants.

Are the new refrigerants safe?

Yes, R-454B and R-32 fall into the A2L category, meaning they have a low level of flammability and are proven to be less flammable than common household products such as hairspray. HVAC professionals have been trained to handle these refrigerants safely, so you can feel confident in the transition.

How can I benefit from upgrading now?

Upgrading before the 2025 deadline allows you to:

    • Lock in lower prices before new systems dominate the market.
    • Potentially access tax credits for switching to more energy-efficient systems.
    • Avoid the uncertainty of dwindling R-410A system availability as stocks run low.
What happens if I wait until after 2025 to replace my system?

If you replace your system after 2025, it will need to use the new refrigerants like R-454B or R-32. While these options are more sustainable, they might be more expensive due to new regulations and increased demand. However, you’ll benefit from a system that’s up-to-date with the latest technology.

How do I know if it’s time to replace my HVAC system?

Arizona AC units endure more strain than those in other parts of the country due to our intense climate. Systems that are 15 years or older are typically nearing the end of their efficient lifespan. If your system falls in this age range, it’s wise to plan for a replacement soon to prevent unexpected breakdowns, escalating repair costs, and to stay aligned with the new refrigerant standards. Additional benefits of a new system will include new warranties & tax rebate options.
